Mona Lisa Smile: Discussion #3 and # 5

Discussion #3
Betty's reaction to Joan's application was serious. She told Joan that she shouldn't go and that she is about to get married and that is what she should worry about. She tries to convince her that if she goes then she will lose everything such as her boyfriend. Betty thinks that she should live life to its fullest and that being a lawyer is not common for women. If I were Betty, I would not act like this. I would tell Joan if it is her dream to go to Yale then go for it. I would tell her that school comes first and that if her boyfriend does not accept that then it is his loss not hers.

Discussion #5
Betty was happy being married with Spencer in the beginning but after a while she was soon becoming upset. Spencer would always have to leave for a business trip and leave Betty behind. Soon Betty finds out that Spencer is with another woman and decides to get a divorce. Betty's mother refused to let Betty stay with her because Betty had to start her life already. Many women back then got married at a young age and the parents needed them to begin living on their own.

  1. I agree with you. If Joan wanted to pursue a career in law then she should go for it aside from what her closest friends thought. School should coincide with a boyfriend not go against it.

  2. I agree with the response that you would have given Joan had it been you whom she told her accomplishment of being accepted to Yale. The roles and thinking of women were very different then compared to what they are now.

  3. Betty was definitely outraged when Joan stated that Katherine had helped her fill out her application for law school. Yet, it is somewhat ironic that, in the end, Betty becomes the one rejecting the social norm and Joan becomes the "cookie-cutter" wife. Nevertheless, they both discovered themselves and realized what they wanted out of life.

  4. Betty was kind of mad and upset at the fact that Katherine helped Joan fill out the application.
